Organic farmers know that planting legumes, like the bell beans seen above, will increase the amount of nitrogen for the next crop.

Nitrogen is so vital because it is a major component of chlorophyll, the compound by which plants use sunlight energy to produce sugars from water and carbon dioxide (i.e., photosynthesis). It is also a major component of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Without proteins, plants wither and die.

So how does this work? The simple answer is that symbiotic bacteria, Rhizobia, which are found within the nodules on the roots of legumes. These bacteria convert nitrogen from the air into usable nitrogen for the plants to live. When the plant is tilled into the soil, the nitrogen is release into the soil and increases soil fertility.

But in simple terms, we simply call it a cover crop.

So, if you hadn't noticed, it's raining. Heck, it's more than raining, it's freaking pouring!! Trees are falling down, roads are closed, the wind is howling, basically it's a mess.

This picture was taken from our last storm and that was a breeze compared to the one we have now. I didn't go to the farm for fear of losing a boot in the mud or having to make camp there because my car got stuck.

All joking aside, all this rain is proving to have consequences for our farm. Here's a crop report from Jim, "The recent rain have had a long term affect of the cropping plan. Thus limiting the variety of items in our harvest shares. As soon as we can get into the field to prepare planting beds we are ready to plant seeds and transplant seedlings from the greenhouse.".

Jim tells me it will take 2 weeks of straight sunshine to give the ground enough time to dry and be ready for transplants.

Strawberry Update:

We've had to replant some strawberries that experienced some mild flooding. We also had to remove some plants that simply didn't take.

Other than that we are seeing our first flowers and expect the first berries in March!!
