Holy moly! This praying mantis enjoyed receiving our attention as much as we enjoy it eating the insects that eat our crops.

We are saving our own lettuce seed! How?

We let it flower and go to seed. Once the seeds have matured we pick em', let em' dry and winnow em'.

It takes around 80 days for a watermelon to go from seed to ripe fruit. We've been patient and we are soon to be rewarded. We are cutting it close because watermelon do not like the cold.

Do you know your cabbages?

This is Savoy Cabbage.

Here is a fun fact for you about Savoy: it does not turn into mush when cooked. 😮 It has the same flavor and appearance as regular cabbage when cooked but retains a firm texture. Awesome!

So here's a quandary: how to eat broccoli AND keep it interesting?

Have you ever tried Broccoli Bisque?

Want some added protein? You can make it creamy with blended cashews.

Black Summer Pok Choi, a type of Chinese cabbage.

Did you know there are two types of seeds? Monocot and Dicot.

How can you tell the difference? Basically, a dicot is a flowering plant with an embryo that bears two cotyledons (seed leaves).

Which one is Pok Choi? It is a dicot.

This is Spring Raab Rapini Broccoli.

Spring Raab doesn't grow like broccoli most people think of. It doesn't have a central head, but rather clusters of yellow buds. These buds along with tender green leaves are sauteed or used in salads for their rich, unique flavor.

We received nearly half an inch of rain! We are so grateful.

Unfortunately, the berries were unable to cope with the rainfall. Many of our berries succumbed to rot. All the berries in the furrows are discarded fruit (see photo).

Therefore, we will be attending farmers' market with a scant 2 1/2 trays of berries. We are disappointed and hope you will understand.
